La Cage Aux Folles
Jean Poiret’s play La Cage Aux Folles explores issues of family loyalties, pride and confidence in oneself and the ignorance of society. The play was written in 1973 and has been successfully performed in both New York and London ever since. The play was also made into a film in 1978 that also benefited from the same winning streak that was associated with the play.
The film was the most successful foreign film within America up until that period. The Cage Aux Folles tells the story of a gay couple that have been together for twenty years. The musical version is currently showing at the Playhouse Theatre in the West End. George owns a gay night club while Albin is the star if the drag show at La Cage Aux Folles night club. The couple enjoy their busy social and work life but are forced to adjust their lives.
George’s son announces his engagement to a daughter of a right wing politician and it appears that it is not juts their lives that are set to change. The daughter begins to campaign for the nightclub to be shut down and George encourages Albin to take a back seat while he attempts to resolve the situation. The two men are forced to compromise their relationship and individual personalities.
