Enjoy
Alan Bennett’s 1980 play ‘Enjoy’ was one of the few flops within his very successful career. However, a revival of the play in 2008 generated a greater interest in the once unsuccessful play. The play celebrated a winning tour of the country and gained a place in London’s West End theatres. The play has been running at Gielgud Theatre since 27th January 2009 and will be running up until 2nd May 2009.
The show sold over £1m advanced tickets which demanded that it be extended as interest and demand for tickets was so vast. The second time round for Enjoy appears to be going very well! Bennett’s previous work has all enjoyed similar success with his play The History Boys being a celebrated piece of British playwriting which was made into a hit film in 2006. Bennett’s work also includes plays such as Habeas Corpus and Forty Years On. Bennett’s background provides much of the foundation for the characters within Enjoy.
He grew up in Armley, Leeds and his modest background gave him an insight into working class British lifestyles. His knowledge of this lifestyle makes the dark comedy within Enjoy much more realist and entertaining. While Enjoy was not an initial hit, it most definitely has become one and is well worth trying to get tickets for!
