Hairspray
The feel-good factor of Hairspray is undeniable as the audience learns a moral lesson whilst being entertained with the expected singed and dancing from a musical show. The show was created based on the 1988 film. The film, and the musical, is set in the 1960s in Baltimore, Maryland. The story revolves around a young girl named Tracey and the struggles she faces thanks to her appearance.
The musical has generated fantastic reviews since its first opening in August 2002 on Broadway. The show opened in the West End in October 2007 and was greeted with the same enthusiasm that it saw in America. The musical has gained itself an award winning reputation by winning eight Tony Awards from a set of thirteen nominations.
The musical was also nominated for a record breaking eleven Laurence Olivier Awards, four of which they won included the prestigious Best New Musical award. The musical is currently running up until April 2009 but rumours of an extension have surfaced due to the demand for tickets. The show has proved massively successful on ‘theatre break’ weekends which usually attracted customers who want to see the latest and most popular shows on the West End. Booking in advance is essential for this show.
